“Why We Sing: A Masterclass with Kirk Franklin” was held on Thursday, April 24 at Yale University. The video and a photo slideshow can be viewed below.
The evening of interactive music-making with the 20-time GRAMMY® award-winning artist, songwriter, and producer was part of Professor Braxton D. Shelley’s course on “The Gospel Imagination: Tradition and Revolution.” Franklin critiqued student compositions, participated in a free-flowing discussion about his life and work, and directed members of a New Haven-based community choir as they sang several of his best-loved songs. The event was sponsored by the ISM’s Interdisciplinary Program in Music and the Black Church and co-sponsored by the Yale Schwarzman Center, Yale School of Music, and Yale Divinity School.
